2011 Fun Run / Walk

It is more than just a run and walk.  It is the gathering of people, breast cancer survivors, family members of all ages who come to celebrate life, memorialize those loved ones lost to breast cancer, and honor those men and women undergoing treatment.

Race day this year will be held Saturday, October 29, 2011 at Moody Gardens.

The early morning is filled with enjoying the floral and fauna of Moody Gardens as the dew on the ground disappears and we feel the beginnings of fall (at least we hope so). Runners, walkers, an kids gather for their events. Various street characters are roaming around to greet the public.

Runners line up the earliest, ready to release that energy that makes them special. Race Director, Dr. Mike Warren, makes the sound to send them on their way from the Gardens to the Seawall in a relatively straight path.

Opening activities follow and include a special tribute to America by the Honor Guard of the Sheriff's Dept and a tribute medley by Dr. Angel Houghton, as memorial homing pigeons are released to encircle the skies right over where we are standing. Thanks to the Golf Coast Racing Pigeon Club and Bim Crowder who makes this happen.

Next comes the kid's 1k directed by Dr. Mary Jo Godinich. After the race is the awards ceremony followed by breakfast, and an elaborate party and lunch. Kids 5-13 show off their medals, as they flock into Palm Beach for many other goodies.

While all this is going on, the adult race awards are announced and presented. Free chair massages are available and adult environmental games are presented all morning. Groups can get their free color group picture taken.

Event planners hope race participants and walkers will use their race number to get a special day discount to the Moody Gardens attractions, the Lonestar Flight Museum, and Schlitterbahn, and take advantage of their day on glorious Galveston Island.

Sue & Phil Overton add to the day's "Celebration of Life." Their passion is to create a warm and loving environment for all the breast cancer survivors and their families at the "Sara P. Rose Breast Cancer Survivor Hospitality Tent". With food, gifts for all, a place to sit and network, we encourage survivors to come and feel the companionship of women - just relaxing and sharing. The tent also features Pam Blacklock, a masseuse especially trained to offer those wonderful free chair massages.
